Default Timing chain (not belt)

Got it!

A chain, not a belt. Is there a way to tell if the chain then is starting to go? (2001 Disco II, 157k miles)

Not without pulling the front engine cover.
Timing chain and gear sets generally last the life of the engine.
And you always replace them if you rebuild a engine.
