Default Timing cover gasket - I simply don't get it

I was searching in the forum for hours and couldn't find an answer. Why are there gaps of the sealing material? How is that gonna seal? I am supposed to add RTV there?

I'll take a stab at it. The gaps may help distribute the clamping force a little better. They also might align with bolts with no internal pressure or do not penetrate through. So, no extra sealer is required, although some mechanics might use an overall skim coat.

Hole #3 (if I count from top left clockwise on the gasket picture) goes into the oil passage. On an AB video Doug uses spray sealant on the block, so that probably does the trick.

I like a skim coat of black silicone.
