Default Tools to change tranny fluid

Its about 20 degrees here and I would like to minimize crawling under the truck in the snow.

Does anyone know exactly what tools I need to change the transmission fluid? I think I read that its an 8mm allen key for the refill plug, but of course, my set only goes to 7mm.

Thanks,
John

Well, you don't have to change the filter so it is the drain plug only and I can't remember the size allen wrench to use, Sorry.

8mm is awfully big, that could be the drain plug though. Pretty sure the fill plug is smaller, like 5mm or so.

The transmission filter was supposed to be changed at 30,000 miles and then supposedly it never needs to be changed again.
I question the never again. That is what Land Rover says, but I still question it.
It never hurts to change a filter.

Just to update the question, (there are far too many threads that never really get the answer posted).

It turns out that it was indeed an 8mm allen key for the fill plug and a 5mm for the drain.

I had planned on using a hand pump to get the fluid in. Unfortunately, it was about 15 degrees outside and the pump I was using worked fine on the first bottle, but then the hoses turned to stone, spilled the next bottle and then the hose came out of the transmission and sprayed me in the face.

After panicking that I wasn't going to be able to refill the fluid, I finally figured out that the tip on the Lucas additive was the same size as the transmission fluid bottles so I just screwed on the tip and was able to simply pour the fluid in without any trouble. (I wish I had tried that first).

JW928,

I have always used is a medium size funnel, a 3 ft / 7/16" ID rubber hose that I placed on the end of the funnel.

I would run the hose down from the engine compartment to the transmission fill hole.

Gravity is a blessing in auto repair.
