top end gasket replacement
I have a 2004 with 134,000 miles on it and over the winter I wanna replace the top end gaskets. I'm also changing out the timing chain, what else should I replace while i have it torn down? I already put on a new water pump over the summer, and added magnacor wires. It needs a camshaft sensor I will be doing this week, so what's left that should be done? Thanks
Exactly what gasket are you replacing and which ones are leaking?
As for the timing chain replacement also do an oil pump gear kit, t/stat.
Have you checked my major service list, I would do it all if it has been awhile.

IMHO, if you buy a skinny 8mm 12 point socket, and snug up the valve covers, the oil problem may be resolved. Many snug them up at each oil change. I belong to the if it a'int broke don't fix it department. The RAVE shop manual covers the oil gears change out, a kit from AB for gears, gaskets, and front crank seal is about $115. Timing chain extra.
You'll be removing the oil pan, so that allows you to clean off the pickup screen, replace the O-ring in the pickup tube, loc-tite the bolts for the pickup. Well, while the bottom is open, what about bearings? They can be done in the truck, see write up in our tech area.
Would suggest you read through the areas in the RAVE, so you know what you'll be looking at. Also, an external oil PSI test may reveal that your oil pump is doing a great job. On the other hand, if you have garage space and time to throw at it, it is a lot of fun to work on a Rover because the Rover gods reward sweat, cursing, and bleeding with more hours of trouble-free fun. Of course raw meat on the celebration fire and scantily clad dancing girls top it off, along with liquids containing alcohol content greater than our gasoline that goes in the tank....
Once you open up the motor, with an open check book at hand, it is hard to stop.
