My 2004 Discovery II has a knock knock knock and two different mechanics have "guessed" stuck lifter(s). So I am going to order new tappets, push rods, lifter arms, lifter shafts, camshaft, gasket kit, timing chain and gears. Not sure if I will do the head gaskets? Not sure if I need new camshaft bearings?
Any of you experienced rovers see anything I am missing and any suggestions where to buy the parts?

 

I would have have the guys here listen to your Knock knock knock (If you can make a video audio recording). Because if it's a Tic Tic Tic then you may end up doing a lot of work that isn't needed and may not work.

Also take it to a Rover specialist if you have one. They will know what is going on.

A low and dull knock knock at idle can be a rod bearing on the crank.
Or the crank to the block.

now if tick tick tick, then yes you are on the right track.
I would just change the oil every 500 miles a few times and put Seafoam in the oil to clean out gunk a few times.
And see how it goes.

 

Is this truck new to you? Do you know what oil is in it?

Make sure you are using a thicker oil, with detergents and ZDDP, like Rotella 15w40.

Also, an oil pressure test would be a good first step, low oil pressure can cause this. take 4 readings, cold at idle and at 2k rpm and warmed up at idle and 2krpm.

If you catch it in time you won't need to change anything other than the oil pump gears.

 

I have owned since Sept 2013. Changed the oil multiple times with Rotela and MMO. The tapping stopped for awhile but has come back again. I have an iPhone mov file but not sure how to get it on here for you to see?

 

Valve train wear will sound like tick tick tick, more pronounced on upper end of engine, while connecting rod bearing wear would be MUCH more pronounced, more of a heavier bang bang, deeper down in engine; and finally, main bearing wear would be even more pronounced, a heavy thud thud thud, deeper down at bottom of engine, near oil pan.

Thats a KNOCK!...not lifters IMO.

 

Yeah you need to shut her down and pull the valve covers at least and take a close look. I'm guessing that is a rod knocking.
