Default Torsion/sway bar diameter

Hello,
I am installing some extended sway bar links on my 2004 D2 which I need to saw off due to corrosion. I purchased a whole new sway bar from an eBay dismantler for really cheap as I needed to replace the bushings anyway as the used some came with some. Anyway, I got the new bar in the mail yesterday but the diameter is much smaller That what is on my truck.

“New” bar is 3/4” or 18mm
existing is 1 1/8” or ~30mm

Other than the diameter it looks the same. So was I shipped a sway bar from an earlier Discovery or was there some reason for 2 different diameter bars? I do not have ACE nor was it removed previously.

The RAVE only mentions a 30mm or 35mm if you have ACE.

Sounds to me like you got a rear sway bar instead of a front.

Actually that is what I am replacing, the rear. I measured the diameter or both the front and rear and it’s the same 30mm.

Bump. Anyone out there have a 18mm rear sway bar or know why there are two different sizes?

They're all two different sizes on all three of my discos. My disco is out at my folks house right now or I'd go measure for sure. I've never seen a rear that's as big around as the front.

The rear sway bar has a lot less effect on handling and does not require as heavy a bar as the front l, as well as material cost and space constraints, are why they are different.

That is unless I am completely misremembering, but I'm almost positive.

What trim level is yours? Mine is an HSE7. Maybe that has something to do with it.

I don't have a 7 seater, that might be an option change with the 7 seater only given the extra weight in the back at times.

Confirmed that the donor truck was an SE so I think mystery solved. Non 7 seater trucks have a thinner rear sway bar than 7 seaters. I find this a bit odd as I think people or cargo back there, it’s all added weight to the rear.

EDIT: Confirmed it’s air suspension that makes the difference in the sway bar diameter. Thicker with air suspension and thinner without. Hope this helps someone in the future.

Picture of the difference
