see attached chart from owners manual, which is part of the free RAVE download.

1650 if no trailer brakes. 4400 - 5500 depending on passengers and gear.

I always find the interpretation the difficult part. I know I should know better, but can someone actually put this in terms that count? Isn't Gross Vehicle Weight not the total weight of the Rover/passengers/object towing? When your starting with a 4400 truck, throw in 2 people and gear (500 lbs) your at 4900 before adding a trailer. I have a Kaufman 24' steal flatbed trailer... I bet that thing weigh's close to 2000 lbs easy, so now I'm at 6900 before even putting a car on the trailer (as I interpret it). Add a 2200 lb Miata to that trailer, and now I'm looking at a total weight of 9100 lbs.

Am I calculating this wrong?

If the trailer has brakes, then you look at that as sorta a separate vehicle.

The owner manual says you can safely (if well skilled) use a trailer with brakes that is 5500 pounds, but you can only add 450 pounds to the truck (that would be one of me plus a slender blonde and small picnic basket). What you can't do is tow 5500 pounds, with a roof rack full of gear and five big guys inside plus six tool boxes.

This doesn't mean you can't move the trailer, but it sets a point at which the lawyers and insurance companies may remove what is left of your fortune after an accident.

Interesting, so that's exclusive of the actual truck weight. Which means, in theory, I could use a D2 to tow my SM to the track... as long as I don't carry spares.

If the trailer has brakes, and you're setup to have them actually work on the rover -- I wouldn't hesitate to pull a little Miata on the back with any car trailer that would fit on a normal tow ball. As with any towing - take it easy.
