Anything over 65mph the D2 gets squirrely with a heavy tow load.

back in 2004 or 2005 my wife and i loaded our three kids up into a mostly restored '77 VW bus with a 1.8 liter air-cooled engine and drove from St. Louis to the Colorado mountains. the wind pushed us all over the place on 70. it was so bad that we eventually got off the highway and took state routes until we hit Colorado Springs. we got pulled over by a Sheriff's deputy for driving too slowly and this was while we were still in the foothills. i didn't even notice the line of 10 vehicles behind us. the deputy gave us a warning to look out for traffic behind us if we had to drive slowly and then gave the kiddos suckers.

i remember running into a guy and his son at a rest area in the middle of Kansas who were VW aficionados. they had spotted our bus and just had to see who was driving it. the guy said he had owned a lot of VW vans and busses and could pull an engine in 30 minutes.

we met a lot of cool people on that trip. a good 40% who were law enforcement helping us out every time we broke down.
