Towing with a Disco
#11
Just figured this was relevant to the discussion. Yesterday I had to pull a 3,500 lb horse trailer with 60 bales (~3,600 lbs) of hay up the side if a mountain and then down the 4 lane, and the trailer has no brakes. She did 50 up the side of the mountain and just a hair over 55 down the 4 lane with no trouble going or stopping. She didn't sway, wobble, or push the truck too much. As long as I accelerated slow and stopped early she was perfect. Again, this is with 32" tires, stock gears, and no rear sway bar.
Obviously, I'd recommend brakes for anything that's 7000+ lbs just for safety sake, but even without it didn't give me a lick of trouble. No sway, no wobble, a little bouncing's over bumps because of my dead factory shocks, and never passed 3500 RPM even up the side of the mountain at 50.

Your engine must be a lot better than my old wheezer. But now I see what the slotted and drilled brakes can do. Next purchase.

Thanks! Yea, she's not quite stock (as shown in my signature, which evidentally doesn't show up when posting from mobile), but it does go go show what they can do. Even stock I'd say she would've pulled a load this big, just a little slower up the hills.
Definitely recommend them, they're great.

No kidding! That's an impressive haul. It gave me hope that my disco could pull my camp trailer. Then I realized he's from Virginia....
It's amazing what altitude will do. On my way to Moab this year, my wife would laugh as my 2500HD (6.0 gas, can't afford the oil burner) would pull our camp trailer (5000~5500lbs) up and over the mountain passes at 65-70mph (and only 8mpg ), while the '99 disco struggled to keep pace EMPTY!

3500lbs is lightweight as the D2 can tow 3500kgs easily, been there - done that.

Haha, had a 2 horsepower increase last time!
But Jfall, I'm sorry, but you're not going to ruin your Disco by towing. I've had mine for right at 20k miles and it has towed a LOT during that time to no ill effects. I would like to install a larger transmission cooler, but I've had no issues so far and I don't forsee any in the bear future.
