Default Trailer Wiring

Can I simply connect a trailer to the plug behind the passenger tail light or do I need a universal wiring kit? Currently I am planning on wiring in a flat 4 extension cable into the connector.

I believe you can. I bought a Curt "isolater" trailer connector and spliced it in. Ran the 4-flat through the vent panel aft of the cargo box.

I just spliced a flat 4 connector in like you're talking about. No problems for 3 years so far.
