Default Tranny fluid change = dirty job

After finally getting the fill hole plug out and replacing it with the proper one I tackled the fluid change. Damn this is one dirty job. Everything drained well, fluid was dirtier than i thought based on my sample earlier this week. But the refill process was a disaster. I used one of those hand pumps that screwed into the top of the gallon jug. 30,000 pumps and 1.5gal later I had fluid dripping all over and of course I dropped the fill plug as I tried to reinstall it. I am dreading doing this again next weekend.

Oh the diff's and transfer case were nice and easy (yesterday afternoon's job)

Thanks to everyone for all the tips and how-to's from fellow members.

Yes that job is insanely messy on the first round not knowing what to expect for flow. Destroyed a pair jeans between the PB blaster, trans fluid and the Lucas additive.

did you check the level after it was warm, otherwise it will be low and the vehicle will hesitate and shift poorly.

No I didn't. I drained about 5 lt. Put in 6lt.

Shifted it through the gears and thentopped it off. But it was cold, not warm. I will be redoing the process again next weekend. Do I need to check it hot?

Don't wait till next week, do the second drain and re-fill now and be done with it.

I hate being in this apartment while my house is being built. The property manager just dropped a letter billing me $350 for spilling oil/ staining the pavement today. I even degreased the pavement and washed it after. The next fluid change might hav to wait 3 week till I move. I have already had my car towed and impounded for forgetting to display my parking permit ($400). I might just park the rover and drive my car for the next couple weeks till I move.

I tried the hand pump that has hoses on both ends and looks kind of like a bicycle tire pump on the tranny. MESSY, and hose kept coming out of the bottle. I gave up on this mess and went with the plunger type pump with a tub/hose attached to the plunger/pump that screws in the top of the tranny fluid bottle that I got at Adv Auto. Much better control on the bottle end, so you only have to keep an eye on and control of the one hose end at the tranny.

A nice clean way to do it is get a pump garden sprayer and remove the tip.
1. it hold two gallons
2. the long wand is handy especialy if you plan on doing the transfer case fluid,
works well on the diffs as well.
3. You can pump the hell out of it before you climb under the truck
4.it has an on and off control
5. most important you stay clean

yah, i stole it from someone.
No gear oil runing down into your arm pit or in you hair.
Works good on the tranny especaily when your topping it off running.
But when you doing you diffs and transfer case you can fill it one time and pump the hell out of it and refill them all in less than 10 minutes with 4 car ramps it "almost" makes the job pleasurable.
