Default Tranny Fluid Volume Reqd. for Filter Change?

I've seen write-ups about filter changes that call for 7 or 8 qts. I just changed my tranny filter and when I drained the pan about 4 1/2 qts. came out. I put it back together and added fluid with it idling after shifting through the gears and it only took about 5 qts. before it was pouring out. Is this correct?

This is correct. The reason that you are not using the full 7 to 8 quarts is due to some of the fluid remaining inside the torque converter part of the transmission assembly. There is no way to get it out without completely dis-assemblying the entire transmission unit.

I know that a filter change only gets what's in the pan. The cooler and torque converter remain full so you will only get a portion of the fluid but he total volume of the transmission is 19.7 pints which is just under 10 qts. Filter change write-ups say 7 to 8 qts. and I only used about 5 so I was wondering if anyone else had used this amount. The transmission shifts fine.

I may be doing my transmission fluid change today. Most people replaced around 4.5-5 quarts of fluid. Do it again in a couple weeks and you will probably get more of the old fluid drained. Review this thread: https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...uid-dii-23070/

Thanks. I only replaced about as much as I drained so I'm sure I have enough fluid.

Its a good idea to keep track of how much fluid drained and how much you put back in. Slid through all the gears several times and re check the fluid level then take the truck for a test drive - your set.
