tranny in Park, tapping noise when brake applied

Default tranny in Park, tapping noise when brake applied

ok, so my D2 is running and I'm parked, I tap the brake to put it in Reverse, and I hear a noise in two places simultaneously. in the left side by the turn signals, I hear what sounds similar to the turn signal noise... and at the same time I hear and feel a light tapping sound from under the shifter... like something is poking up from under the shifter.

only happens when it's running, in Park, but not when moving
no idiot lights are lit on the dash... but the ultra gauge is showing pending code 1668. maybe unrelated

any ideas?

It's the shift lock solenoid... keeps you from taking it out of park without your foot on the brake. It's been required on most north American cars since about 1989... not sure when SUV's and trucks had to start having it.

Oh, and there is a relay in the under dash fuse box for the interlock.

Thank you jafir! is that something that if I don't fix it asap I wound be able to shift from park? and if I don't fix immediately, can anything bad happen? I'm going on a trip this week...

I'm not sure it's broken.... maybe just louder as it gets older?

If it fails you can't shift. Came about from incidents like the lady with the Audi 5000 that plowed thru her garage wall, made a lot of news stories, and cut the value of those vehicles quite a bit. And it is normal for some noice.

so I have done some searching still doing more... my brake lights work, though I think the bulb in the passenger side brake light is out... looks like if i keep driving it, the solenoid can get stuck and lock the shifter

is this correct... pull up on the shifter **** and the **** will come off, and then pull the black shift **** housing up to reveal the solenoid? can cleaning the solenoid give good results? or replace it

It sounds like it is working correctly. you are supposed to hear the click. Yes, you can pull the shifter **** off, just be careful. you really have to pull hard. The brake light bulb is not related to the clicking noise.

I would not worry about it.

Better to worry about if what you are about to eat is healthy.
Read the contents label and the calorie count.

OK, so if that relay failed..
You are in drive.
It fails and you can't shift out of drive..

You are stopped anyway.
and the Brake pedal is pressed.

Just turn off the key.

If it fails in Park, then you can' leave where you are.

Of course, a meteorite could come down and hit the Rover.

But, I would not worry about that either.

These relays have a MTBF which is very large. Probably thousands of clicks more than the rover will last as a collection of working parts.


Statistically, you are safe.

I took a dremel and cut the locking pin off the selunoid when the noid went bad. Right way to do it? Probably not, but when u cant shift out of park a day before I head to the mountains, it works....
