Default Tranny problems

I've had an issue recently on my AT. Hoping someone could give some guidance/advice. 3 issues it has-all get worse as it heats up

1. Does not loke to take off from a standstill in 1st when in drive. If it does, it will shift to 2nd at 2.5- 3k rpm(even with the gas to the floor)

2. Does not like to go into reverse. I almost always have to hit neutral for 3-5 sec then hit reverse or nothing.

3. At 40-45mph, the direct drive clutch will sometimes lock and unlock repeatedly.

If I select 1st on gearshift, takes off in 1st no problem, selecting 3rd insteasd of drive elimenates the lockup issue. Nothing helps the reverse issue.

I have drained and filled the tranny 3 times, all about a week apart, the last time adding a bottle of Lucas. It helped for a while, but is now back at it again.

Would changing the filter help? Judging by the previous owners lack of maintenance, guessing it hasen't ever been done. I have talked to a guy at a local tranny shop, who admits he has never worked on a rover. He and I think about the same thing, either change the filter, cross fingers and hope. Or drop in a diffrent tranny. The cost of the filter, fluid, labor, etc was about $250, or I could get a tested/waranteed used tranny put in for about $900.

What do you guys think?? Any help/opinions greatly appreciated

Your trans filter is clogged, you can replace it yourself if you can turn a wrench.
And never worked on one of these before is a lame excuse to charge more money, they are no different than any other car or truck.
If you/he can change the trans filter in a Ford you can change one on a Rover.

I'm somewhat handy with a wrench, It's the exhaust that scares me. The threads on the bolts are rust to the point their almost non-existent. 250 parts and labor too much I take it?

Sorry, I forgot that you have a DI, $250 sounds ok.
A DII is much easier to do this on.
Let him do it.

Well, I'll give it a shot. Just wasn't reassuring when the mech said he's never worked on a rover before and hopes nothing else is wrong in there, cause he wouldnt know where to begin. Although he did a Jag not long ago, said the trannys were pretty similar(both zf's)

Unless you are rebuilding a auto tranny they are all the same.
Remove the pan, change the filter, replace the pan and refill with the correct fluid.
