2000 DISCO TRANNY
I have had no problems going to my local "trusted" mechanic. There are no special precautions that you have to take when changing the transmission fluid that I know of but when you take it to the dealership they'll charge you $200. YOUR mechanic will only charge you $85 to $90. Get them to put the Lucas additive in. I have only gone about 2500 miles with the oil and tranny additive fluid added but I have already noticed a difference. No vibrations from either and smooth idling. SOmeone else from the forum recommended Lucas products to me and now I swear by them.
here is a site that has a good illustration http://www.roverparts.com/techtips_main.html and instructions..
It's not a stupid question. There is no longer a dipstick and forbin10's link is pretty good, http://www.roverparts.com/Tech_trans...uid_level.html
You may also want to consider a trans flush. Many shops now offer this service. Costs around $100 I think. The advantage is that it replaces all the fluid, were a typical service only replaces about half the fluid. This is because the converter fluid can not be changed. The disadvantage is that this flushing can dislodge dirt and potentially cause problems. Some people swear by it, others call it snake oil. The jury is still out. Personally, I don't care for the flush thing. But, it's up to you.
