Transfer Case 2004 Land Rover Discovery S 87,000

You guys may remember my post from 2 weekends ago. If not here is a quick recap. I bought a Land Rover 3 weeks ago and after driving it for only a week and 300 miles it began to make this roaring / winding / grinding noise. I posted that I thought it was my transmission. So to the advise of the reply I stopped driving it and took it down to a local Import Auto repair shop who advised me that my transfer case was bone dry, not a drop of fluid. He filled it up with fluid and the noise is still there. He told me that I drove it off the dealership lot with no fluid and the damage was done!!!

I can get it fixed for $1400 plus the cost of 6 hours of labor. I called the dealership and explained what happend and of course there was nothing they could do because I bought it as is and with no service contract. I can't belive I was so stupid. I think I was just so jaded by the whle thing. It was my first car to purchae own my own and I have always wanted a Disco. Everything went so well when I bought it I guess i should have known something was going to go wrong. My friends said the dealership could smell me as soon as I walked on the lot and probably all the salesmehad a good laugh at me as I drove off the lot.

My question is:

1) Does $1400 sound right for a used transfer case?
2) Is a non Land Rover dealer mechanic able to fix this kind of repair?
3) Once the transfer case has been repalced hpw reliable do you think a used transfer case will be?

Thanks in advance for anyone who may reply to this post and offer advise.

Derrick,

A site I trust (along with several other guys here) is RoverLandParts.com

Here's your T-Case on that site, used:

http://www.roverlandparts.com/index....PROD&ProdID=98

So yes, $1400 sounds reasonable based on the refurb price over at roverland.

If you ran the case dry, $1400 won't fix it. All the bearings as well as many of the shafts and gears will have been damaged.
Go to Rover Land Parts and buy one of their guaranteed used ones and have it installed, cause as a retired service manager I have to tell you, yours won't see another dirt road for under $2500 in rebuild costs, and that is only if the case wasn't damaged.
