Default Transfer case front ouput shaft play

How much play is normal on the front output shaft? I recently replaced my front driveshaft after experiencing the typical vibration. In the process, I noticed that the front flange of the transfer case had a lot of play. Should it be able move side to side?

No play should happen, sounds like the output bearing is bad, replace right away, or you will go through UV joints, and you run the risk of causing savere damage to other parts in your transfer case.If you are handy, and some tools and info ,this shouldnt be a real hard job to do, I have repaired other transfer cases in other trucks, this shouldnt be any harder.

Thank you for the quick reply. I was afraid of that. Do you know what the part numbers would be? I assume I need a bearing and a seal, but I can only find the seal at the usual part sources. Hopefully I do not have to special order anything, because I am supposed to leave for Moab on Wednesday.

You don't neede a part number, either go on line to Toddco, British Atlantic or call your local dealer.

Turned out to be a loose nut on the output flange. My thanks go to Bill at Great Basin Rovers for diagnosing my problem. I still need to replace the seal, but the bearing is good. I have no idea how the nut loosened on its own.

It may have been removed and reused. New ones should be fitted when the nut's been removed for any reason.
