My 97 Discovery1 has a metallic noise on the underside of the vehicle, it has been dripping a drop or two of oil but I thought it got oil from the transmission so I always ck'ed the tranny for oil. A shop told me the transfer case is bad and it would cost $2k plus for a used/rebuilt part and labor. Another shop told me $1.6k plus...parts and labor.
I did some checking around and priced the used part for $400.00 and labor for about $500.
I replaced the engine 3yrs ago (40k miles on the engine ) with 130k miles total now on the truck.
I am soliciting anyone's opinions on the above situation.
BTW, my wife drives the truck.

Sounds like you need to get better acquainted with your truck and its needs.
A used case is fine as long as you get the right one and it is quiet.
Did they quote you on an ly230 and what did it come out of?

 

Thanks for the response, I do need some educating on LR's. I do not know what a "ly230 is" and no...no mentioned was made of such.
By-the-way what is a "ly230" is that suppose to be the type of transmission used on this truck? and what is a reasonable price for use parts and labor ?

That is a typo, it is a LT 230, that is the model number of the transfer case that was used in DI's.
The transmission and transfer case are two seperate units bolted together, they both have their owen fluids and the use different fluids.
In order to check the fluid level in the transfer case you will need to crawl under the truck and use a 1/2" drive rachet to remove the fill/check plug which is located on the back of the transfer case next to the parking brake dum.
The plug is on the drivers side.
Remove the plug, stick your finger in the hole, does it come out wet with oil? If so then the fluid level is fine, if not then it need to be topped off with gear lube.
Any shop can check this for you.

Oh, I am pretty good at mechanical stuff., do all mech. stuff on my other 3 non LR vehicles.

Not sure if I responded before but your curiosity about my inquiring into a 94 T/case was only because you said you had access to one at a good price and it sounded as if would fit the 97 disco.

You have options, get as new a D1 t/case as you can, , I believe the 97 thru 99 D1 cases are all the same.

 

when I replaced mine I had to shop around. In fact every D1 have the same t-case BUT the t-case differs if the truck is manual or automatic.

I've been lucky and found one for 250.00$ 2 hours away from where I live. My advice would be to get a used one... but as new as possible i.e 96 to 99, or with low mileage on it.

It took me a week to perform the job on evenings when I came back from work. You will need at least access to a pit or a lift otherwise, it will be a real PIA. You will also need help when time will come to drop your old one and install the new. If you have any more questions feel free to ask anyone here . Good Luck
