So I have a leak that I am nearly 100% sure is coming from the front input shaft seal pictured below. My question is if the transfer case can be slid back vs dropped to replace this. I have a extra transfer case and know these things are very heavy from moving it around. So can the driveshafts be disconnected and the box unbolted from the transmission, then slid back far enough to swap the seal or does all of the upper connections (sensors/ diff lock / shifter) need to be removed as well?
My bet is going to be you'll just want to drop it. The output shaft of the transmission is fairly long, so you'll have to pull it back quite a ways anyway, and seating the new seal in place would be a massive headache under the truck.
100% agree with Alex. You won't be able to move the case back far enough to clear the shaft without disconnecting most/all of the attachments, at which point you may as well lower the thing to the floor.
Good thoughts. I was guessing that would be the case. Since I have the extra t case I might swap seals in that and have ready to go. Thanks for the info.
Do you know the years and mileage on both cases? Later years (I believe 2003-04) have different internal structures that supposedly make them quieter. And of course there's the CDL.

Both are 04 cases with CDL. Mileage is 179k on the one in the truck although it looks like it has been resealed or redone at some point. The other is about 135k and pretty clean, no leakage etc.
