Default Transfer case/transmission problem???

Had my transmission rebuilt last year, now seems like I'm having problems with the transfer case. The truck seems like it slips into neutral and just spins. I don't know? I'm not a mechanic. I called my indy Rover mechanic (head gasket job), he said it could possibly be some shaft that goes into the transfer case (worn out?) or could be the transfer case itself that needs to be rebuilt/replaced. Transmission guy tells me it will be less expensive just to get another transfer case vs. rebuilding the transfer case. I don't know....need opinions on this.

You can get a used case at u-pull salvage yards for about $125, more if they pull it. Most Rovers are in the boneyard due to head gaskets and the like.

What ever it is, you need to get it into a knowledgable Rover mechanic, make sure it is not sure an adjustment to a linkage, and have it fixed.
Let us know what you find.

Having replaced the t-case in both my '98 and '04, I will tell you yes, it is cheaper to get a good used one vs. rebuilding you're current one.

On the same token, having 2 t-cases go bad on me, I will say if it was the t-case causing the symptoms above, I would be almost certain it would be making all sorts of horrible, grinding noises. I would definitly have someone look at it before buying a new(used) t-case.

In case it is the problem:http://www.car-part.com/cgi-bin/sear...erPage=1&iKey=

Mike....I'm going to have my indy Rover mech have a look at it. He's been working on LR's since 1974, LR's are the only vehicles that he works on, and he's been in business for himself now for 6 years. He was recommended to me by my brothers wife's uncle (who only works on American vehicles). He seems to be thourough and very knowlegeable when it comes to our trucks.

So, as already mentioned, do not let them talk you into rebuilding it, they make lots of money doing it and you get screwed.
Have them look at it, make sure, without removing it that it is an internal issue, get an estimate to R&R your case and installing a good guaranteed used t/case.
If you want a good deal on a used t/case, give me a shout.
