Transmission Replacement
Hello everybody. I have a quick question. I own a 2002 Disco 2 and my trans is out, only have reverse. I came across a good deal on a 2004 trans, and it comes with the lockable diff. Will the 2004 model fit in my 2002? I have the Tom Woods driveshaft because I installed a 3 inch lift? And one more, what thermostat kit do I need to replace that factory set up? I just want a simple inline. Thanks
Inline thermostat info is in a sticky thread at the top of the D2 forum.
I can't answer the question about whether it will fit but I do think the later transmission is slightly longer. You might need the transmission and transfer case mounts along with the tranny and t-case themselves.
If you get the 2004 transmission/transfer case setup, you will also need a mechanism to activate it. I have a complete assembly out of a Disco 1 that's ready to go into another D2; it will be for sale very soon. If you are interested please send me a DM.

The transmission and transfer case mounting blocks will be slightly different, but will attach to the same points on the chassis regardless of what year you have. So you MAY need to get those blocks as well, as I said. Or you may not need to at all. Or you may just need to elongate the holes in the mounts that are already on your truck.
Just a little follow-up - I was actually replacing my TC and refreshing the transmission. I was recommended to upgrade to the HP24, but after doing some research it looks like the 24 was some kind of one-off upgrade for LR and as little difference, as there is between 22 and 24 I was having a hard time finding replacement parts that would specifically say they will also fit the 24 (I'm not a transmission specialist so if it doesn't say on the box it will fit, I don't risk buying
). On the other hand, HP22 was installed in a bunch of other cars and parts are plentiful (I was actually using a rebuild manual for a Renault). It probably doesn't really matter since these transmissions are supposed to run for a long time, but if you have plans to rebuild your "new" one, might be worth considering.
