Default Tray Above Sun Visors - How Does It Attach?

I wrote last week about the Disco II I was picking up in SoCal. Got, and it’s great, other than the damage to the bumper from getting hit in the rear by a 5.0 Mustang the night I got it (mentioned elsewhere). Easy fix for me.

So my son and I went to pick your part, with a list, mostly little stuff - clock, latch for center console lid, latch for battery cover, and the screws to hold the tray up above the windshield. The headliner was replaced by previous owner, and they did not finish uptting that back together, and the two center screws were missing.

My son pulled all the screws out of the tray on a 2001 D2 in the yard. One set of the screws is longer than the other. So he noted which was which, and came home to install them. But there is nothing for them to secure to. If you take a real skinny Phillips screwdriver or similar tool, and poke through thee empty screw hole, it just hits the roof. Screw does not contact anything. Tray still hangs.

Anyone know what it looks like up there behind the headliner, and can firedt me in getting this thing connected? Thanks!

I will do a headliner refresh later in the month. Here are some pics which I took at the local Pick A Part last year when I dismantled the headliner. Unfortunately, I do not remember what held the screws on. I believe there is some sort of backing plate on the inside of the roof. I hope the pic will still help.

Smart man! Took pics during disassembly.

If you remember, when you are in there doing yours, a picture of what is above/inside that area would be great. Thanks!

Will do. I was hoping to get it done this week. Unfortunately, my transfer case grenaded. The truck is in the shop awaiting a rebuilt unit from Ashcroft UK.

There are plastic push in clips that the screws mount to. They have cut outs in the sheet metal that the push ins clip too. The screw then spreads the plastic out and makes a solid anchor. Double check everything is lined up, it's a pain to do. If I remember that correctly.
