Trim from D2 bumper: protect headlights/electrical?

Trim from D2 bumper: protect headlights/electrical?
Until I can get a winch bumper, I'm going to trim the front bumper on my D2.

Does anyone that's done this have tips?
More importantly, there is a shield on the underside of the bumper that seems to protect the headlights/electrical from mud/water. If I cut the bumper, it will have to go, too. Why doesnt that cover matter? Anyone made a mod to replace that shield after cutting the bumper?
