The ride on the Discovery II is decidedly HARSH compared to the Discovery I.
The Discovery II has a lot of road noise transmitted into the cabin.

For a long trip, as far as my opinion - Discovery I wins.
As far as ride quality.

A lot quieter. You also don't feel every bump.

Discovery II wins - as far as MPG and perhaps power up hills.

Here are my MPG stats:

Start Boulder, CO. Fri 1pm June 29th. Tank FULL.

14.122 Gallons $52.80 Rawlins, WY

15 gallons $58.90 Ogden UT

(Trip from Ogden to Park City, UT)

Excursion to Logan Utah

12.07 Gallons $46.84 Logan UT

15 Gallons (estimated) $58.90 Gallons Pilot - Twin Falls, ID

20.787 $83.34 gallons Richland, WA

11.877 Gallons $46.85 Kirkland, WA - July 1 (TANK FILLED)

___________________________
Totals

Gallons: 87.892
Cost: $312.65

Miles traveled: 1531

MPG= 1531/87.8932 = 17.418 MPG - driven at 65mph
Not bad MPG!! Thats actually impressive.
I would like to add that you have something else going on when you talk about comfort level in a DII on road. DII's handle much nicer on road than DI's. I own both. I was shocked the first time I drove a DII because it soaks up every bump and crack unlike my DI. Both are completely stock!

Recent trip from Reno to San Francisco I got an average of 21 mpg. And that's through Donner Pass and the like. I was very pleased. I kept it around 70 on cruise the whole way. Generally around town I get an average of 15.5 mpg but I drive like a grandpa in Florida on a Sunday afternoon haha doesn't bother me, but I think sometimes the people around me...

I also have to say my D2 rides very nice with the airbags on and off the road. I know a lot of people complain about how they break and stuff... but no problems with mine and I love how they ride.
