Looks like you could certainly apply some grease to that U joint that hasn't been touched in a long time. As for leaky TC, you really are not in position to deal with that, other than buy one of those $7 pumps that allow you to pump in the fluid. Would squirt in 1/2 container of White Shepard oil leak stop, and fill with 85W150 oil. The fill hole is up on the side, open with 1/2 inch ratchet. If you can lock CDL, driving with front shaft out removes the "tranny killer" option.

 

I'm with Savanna on this, just keep topping up the fluid, no real way to repair on the road (unless the drain plug is loose). Then after you get home, clean off the transfer and see if you can find where the leak is starting. There are some places that can be resealed with the transfer in place, and others that require it's removal. Not a fun job (not difficult just lots of bits and very greasy), I'm doing mine right now. It's out, resealed, and ready to go back in. I may take tomorrow off and do it Monday (I can do that since I'm retired) Whereabouts in Seattle is home?

Went to Park City Utah.
Extra 120 miles. Not good
Back in Ogden.
Went to O'Reiley Autoparts and got a $12 grease gun - full size
and some Valvoiine grease rated for Ujoints.

On my 2001 Discovery II there is a grease fitting on the front shaft - in the very front.
Got that grease fitting.
And, hit the grease fitting on the sliding sleeve of the shaft.

On the rear of the front shaft - there is a DOUBLE U-joint.
Two U -joints - one after the other!
No Grease fittings.

On the rear shaft-
One grease fitting in the front.
Hit that one.
Was not able to get much into it.

So, I found 2 grease fittings for U joints
one for the sliding fitting.
And, that's it.

There are two more U joints - the one after the other that I can't grease.

I wish you luck, that front driveshaft is the original, when you get to Seattle (see, I'm thinking positive), contact me. I have an original driveshaft sitting in the corner of the shop that you can have and either rebuild it yourself or have it rebuilt. That way you won't have any down time. (You might even be able to talk me into using my hoist, a whole lot more comfortable than crawling around on the floor)

Bad vibration at 70MPH. Really bad at 75MPH.
Rumbling noise.
Drove back at 65 MPH

Seems my Disco feels every bump in the road.
Does a 2001 D2 have air bags in the back?
If so, mine could be down to the stops.

The ride is no where as soft and nice as a D1.

Appreciate the advice on my drive shaft being original.
I need to get that out of there I have heard.

Clecked the diff fluids in Logan Utah and diffs were all topped up.
Front Diff seems hotter than back diff.

 

I'm glad you made it! I'm not sure why your front and rear diffs are different temps. Thats odd. I could see if one was "spinning" faster than the other but that wouldn't make sense because your going the same speed in the front as you are in the rear... As far as if you have the air bags, there are a couple of ways to check. On the dash, located by the emergency 4 way flashers there should be a button that looks like "raising the a$$". If you have that button then you have the air bags. Or, go to the back and look to see if you have coil springs and shocks. Either way good luck on your future endeavors my friend. I hope you can find a job soon. Feel free if you do decide to sell the Disco to stop back and let us know whats going on. Also, tell the owner about the forum and maybe give him your user info and let him take over your account. This way he knows more of the history with the rover. (Do this after you have the cash in hand)

The ride on the Discovery II is decidedly HARSH compared to the Discovery I.
The Discovery II has a lot of road noise transmitted into the cabin.

For a long trip, as far as my opinion - Discovery I wins.
As far as ride quality.

A lot quieter. You also don't feel every bump.

Discovery II wins - as far as MPG and perhaps power up hills.

Here are some photos of a loose emergency brake drum.
Funny I got this one today on my lift. You'll see if you look closely the rust on the drum, the set screw has backed out causing the driveshaft to **** crooked and also allow the brake drum to wobble around 'cause it's loose.
