Hey LR forum (it’s been stated...but this is THE resource - I’m sincerely grateful!) - I’m still on the hunt for a truck. Saw two today.
The first was a one owner 123k ‘04. Underneath it was California clean. Then I looked at the engine from underneath and it was dripping so much oil I just left. It looked bad. In retrospect I should have addressed with owner. Maybe I will go back.
Second - another ‘04 100k. Used and maybe not loved. Although I have to admit I liked it - a lot. Broken left rail (or something) on passenger side seat fore and aft mechanism. Headliner sagging and held up with pushpins. Surface rust on frame and suspension components. For PA/East Coast it was acceptable. See photo.
Now the problem - see photos. Seems like more than typical oil mess on engine. Also, I noticed a quart of oil tucked into one of the rear seat storage pockets. Hmmm. There is documentation stating “replace oil pan gasket, replace valve cover gasket” $1300 estimate that “customer declined” to do 3 months ago.
Q: is this typical or signs of something other than gaskets?
If this is indeed fixable with gaskets I will probably try an buy it. But is something else...may pass.
thanks for any feedback.
That is more than a pan gasket/valve covers my bet is the front oil seal is shot. Given the 1300 estimate and all the other issues I would walk away. I suspect there is way more wrong and that Disco has not been looked after at all, and these things need regular maintenance.
Buy the california clean one. significatn oil leaks are more common on 03-04's due to the restricted breather tube. Both of those trucks have plugged oil breather tubes, they just need to have the PCV mod done. With that few miles not even the front seal is worn out.
