Any idea how hot it got when the temp gauge was climbing? I don't think it moves above the normal range until temps are above 220. Hopefully you didn't crack a liner. Easier & cheaper to replace the front cover than the engine. And I hope the people you're taking it to are knowledgeable about Rovers.

Most likely a front cover gasket. Unless they didn't torque the head bolts properly. Do away with that plastic thermostat and do the inline mod.

Wouldn't the block have to be cracked behind the slipped sleeve to cause coolant to leak in and fill the cylinder?

That's a real bummer grandkodiak, either a new block or a donor engine. HG's would have been far simpler in fact in hindsight.
