Wait, so they put smoke in ur dipstick tube. and it came out of cylinder 7? So it must be a slipped sleeve?

What else would cause smoke to come up through the cylinder and also allow coolant into the engine block that I should ask them to look for?

 

This is what I would tell your shop to do....

 

If they smoked the crankcase through the dipstick tube, smoke would likely wind up entering the intake manifold through the crankcase breather/pcv system. If the intake valve happened to be open on cyl 7, smoke could easily enter the cylinder that way and exit through the spark plug hole (assuming that is how they ran their test).


The test Rovermastertech suggested would be much better, no mistaking the outcome that way.


If you lost a gallon of coolant through a single cylinder in 2 weeks, I would expect that cylinder to be misfiring it's *** off on startup every time. You didn't mention any misfires so that whole theory of a slipped sleeve seems suspect to me.

If a single cylinder is consuming that much coolant I believe it 'steam cleans' it. Which you can check with a mini camera. Or at least have a look at the plug. It will be clean, compared to the other 'deposited' plugs.

 

they removed the front cover to check for leaks there and they also did a pressure test on the cooling system. the smoke test was done on several turns of the motor, only #7 so it wasn't a pvc backup through the intake valves. cars buttoned back up and ill drive it home today until I can find a buyer or replacement motor.

 

I have a harbor freight camera I can try lookin later, just drove the truck back home today after work, ill pull the plug and see if it fits in there.

ive noticed 4.6 motors are FAR more common on the used market... and in many cases available with half the miliage of the 4.0 stock ive found so far. any particular reason I couldnt just get one of those istead of looking for a 99-02 secondary air 4.0? if not, what years would work and can they be from the range rovers too? LOTS of ranger 4.6's for sale everywhere.
