the big black heat shield under the hood on my D1 is getting pretty ratty, and one of the retaining clips keeps falling out no matter how many times I replace it...

Would the hood melt or anything if I pulled it off?

That engine compartment get a lot hotter then most vehicles and you don't want to remove that pad, consider some 3M spray glue to reattach it.
