Default Used Engines?

I've seen a lot of threads mention buying used engines online as an alternative to the more expensive remanufactured.

How do people generally determine the authenticity of the listed miles, quality of engine, etc? Does a good mechanics inspection reveal necessary details?

Thanks!

I am interested as well. Mine just started making a ton of noise. Given the price of a "new" one, I am inclined to invest enough money to fix this one.

I am thinking if I cannot sort out mine, I would buy a used short block and rebuild it before. Seems to be about $1k of parts and a relatively straightforward process.

This is the route that I'm undertaking. I've never rebuilt an engine before (but I'm also a shop teacher, so it's in my wheelhouse...or so I'm telling myself) and so far it's been going pretty good. The rebuild manual obviously helps move things along! I pulled my long block out of a junker which was apparently at the yard because of "electrical problems" but I found out just at the end that the engine had 200k on it so I was worried it would be all out of sorts. On the other hand, a D2 doesn't get to 200k without being well cared for. Turns out it was the later, I sent my parts off to the machine shop and they barely had to do anything to them because they were basically straight and in spec. I'm putting it back together right now and I'm finding a lot of joy in the process, its fun to work on a sparkling clean engine. I just hope that I'm doing everything properly as I would hate to have it installed and have some obvious preventable problem appear.

Keep taking your time and keep enjoying yourself and the end product will be great.

Try this guy. I got a used, low mileage transmission from him for a great price:

If mine went I would go the short block route, I have a 4.0 block right now and if it was not iffy I would rebuild it. Pretty sure it is cracked, at the front right, a lot of milkshake on the right side front bearing bolt.
