Ut ohh ...... I put the green stuff in
In august of this year I had myupper radiatorhose replaced on my 1999 disco 2. When I got it home from the dealer the expansion tank was low on fluid (really low actually). Anyway I should have gone back tohave them fill the tank, but it wasfar away soinstead I decided to put some of the Prestone universal antifreesein (it said for all makes and models). Now I seefrom some posts that the two shouldnt/cant be mixed. The truckseems to be fine since I did it so I dont want to go through the hassle of draining the system if I dont have to. I dont get it...........why cant you mix the two if the green stuff says for all makes/all models/and all types of antifreese. The onlynegative thing that I can see out of it is that I am not going to get the longevity of the OAT stuff? Am I really doing damage? Thanks alot for the help.
I do know when I worked for a GM dealer for a time, that when the 2 were mixed, over time this turns everything to a muddy looking mess inside the cooling system. I have know it to mess up water pumps. It looks really nasty depending on the mixture. I guess I would recommend getting the system flushed, and put the correct stuff in.
Go back and read the bottle. Prestone does put out an antifreeze mix that is compatible with green and orange. I don't remember what color it is, but it is ok. Doesn't last as long as Dexcool, but you shouldn't run Dexcool as long as it says you should.
Best case is you should flush and change your antifreeze, but if it is the stuff I am thinking of, you should be ok. You just can't mix the regular green antifreeze with Dexcool.
