Value of 2000 Discovery
Hi All,
looking for suggested asking price for 2000 Discovery with 115k miles with engine that is overheating and currently must be towed. I’m willing to pay classified charge, but have no idea what to ask for it.
This vehicle belongs to my elderly parents who are not interested in paying for vehicle repairs. I will post pictures if I list on classifieds, looking for community feedback on price range. . Price range based on various condition would be helpful.
moderator’s apologies in advance if I have violated any policy, just looking to give the parents some guidance. Thank you.

An overheating vehicle is going to be hard to sell because there's no way to tell what's happened. Has it blown a head gasket? Was an overheating event so bad that it warped a head? Someone is going to have to take a punt on it and they won't be willing to lay out a lot of cash.
I watch Disco prices in my area and non-runners are usually $1,500 or less. If someone posts a non-runner for a high price they continue to reduce the price until it's at about that level and then it sells. Sorry, there's not a lot of value in a non-running Disco. If it's in great shape and running well they can fetch $5k - $7k+. If it's in perfect condition except for the overheating, I'd probably start at $2,500 and go from there just in case someone has to have it right away, but be willing to drop the price as time goes on. Be prepared for it not to sell at all because Discos have a reputation of being problematic. You'd probably be ok to let someone drive it for five or so minutes before it overheats. Ride with them and don't let them go far. Down the street and back just to let it shift and hear if there are any bad noises.
Check the oil - does it look like a milkshake? Look in the coolant reservoir, does it have oil in it? If not, it could just need a water pump and/or a thermostat and you could get a lot more for it. If it were me, I'd get a mechanic to check it out and be willing to spend a few hundred to make a few thousand more on the sale.
You'll get more attention listing it on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace than you will with the classifieds. Remember to be wary of scammers because there are TONS of them. Sell it as-is, where-is, in-person, no warranty given or implied, cash deal only and have a counterfeit pen ready to check the bills. Oh, and never turn your back on a stranger.
OR - buy it for yourself, fix it up and join us in our love for Discos!
Good luck!

I've bought a small hand full of non runners and runners with overheating problems in the $400-600 range. Just picked one up a couple days ago for $400.
The value has come up some, and the condition of the rest of the vehicle does have some effect. Look at your local classifieds. Facebook marketplace is a big one. See what D2s in similar condition are going for, list it for $2000 less or half the list price of what you're finding, whichever is greater.

The condition of the chassis is an important factor too. If it's a truck from a no-salt state and the undercarriage is in good condition, someone may be willing to jump on it to fix the engine. It's it's rotting away underneath, it's already mostly just parts.
Hi.
Bought my 2000LR with 125K miles for $1500 overheating in a few minutes after starting cold. Very good interior and exterior, unmolested everything else. Rotten chassis rear.
Had one head gasket blown. Replaced that side, planed head, discarded the original wimpy clog-prone clogged radiator for shoehorning a bigger one in place, eliminated the thermostat bypass circuit forever. Has ran daily 11 years since. Now am pissed at roof leaks damaging the ceiling.
As a main cause of heat damages, seen too many geniuses idling at 100F+ playing with their phones in a sun baked parking lot abusing their Discos for an hour believing they bought an airconditioner with wheels and not a vehicle. They want comfort, then they pay overheating repairs. Becoming a civilization of wealthy wimps after pleasure and comfort with allergy to sweat.
Fixing it for your parents would be a nice present. If they do not want it after fixed, there is a chance to sell it better. If you hire an expensive mechanic, may not work. But eliminate the thermostat bypass unless you live in Alaska !
