Valve Cover Gasket Position Question
Hi folks. I just noticed that my valve cover gaskets are leaking again after only being replaced 7 months ago. There is a tab on the gasket; can anyone tell me the correct position for the tab? Should it be visible or not? Should the numbers be on top or facing bottom. One side shows the tab and the numbers, the other side doesn't show anything.
Thanks!
Thanks!
My valve cover gaskets were "vomiting oil" immediately after Land Rover replaced them. LR claimed that theNEW gaskest were split and wanted me to pay $$$.$$ to replace both of them.
I discovered that the VC screws were never torqued down- only finger tight. You may want to check the VC screws. Could be a simple install mistake like mine.

NOPE!!!
Jamie,
If a dealer installed the v/c gaskets go back and have them replace them, they are covered by Rovers 1 year warranty. Other wise try tightening them, just not too tght or they will really leak.

I replaced mine myself, and there is only one way they can go on, unless you somehow force the gasket on to the head upside down. If you put it in right side up and reversed, well, you really can't, the tab will be on the wrong side and you can't put the screws in.
The shop needs to replace them with two brand new gaskets, because once you install it, it can't be re-used, the installation process has made micro-scopic indentions that will remain, and once reinstalled the micro-scopic bulge in the valve (rocker) cover that put the micro-scopic indention in the gasket will be somewhere else and it will leak over time. Hope that made sense....
Anyway, by the service manual they are to be installed DRY (no creames, compounds, or lubes) and torqued exactly to spec.
I did it that way and I'm 1500 miles so far and no leaks. Go back and make them give you results.
