Help! We recently bought a very nice 1999 Disco II (85kmiles). The vehicle has run great for us for the last 6 months with exception of a head gasket job that was covered under warranty. About a week ago the Service Engine light came on briefly and I noticed a steady vibration only when driving up the steep hill to my house. I've been reading through the forums and was curious if you could help me...I think it might be the U-joint but it only vibrates when going up hill. Occasionally there is a clicking noise that is associated with the vibration. If it is the u-joints will this be a spendy job? Of course the warranty expired three weeks ago! Murphy's Law! Thanks!

To have it done at a shop will cost you $250-$300, haveing a new transmission put in will cost you $7,000-$8,000.
You need to STOP DRIVING THE TRUCK!! When the double cardon joint fails it WILL take out your transmission.
Have it towed to a shop and have thefront driveshaft rebuilt using greasable u-joints.

Having the front driveshaft rebuilt is not as expensive as the alternative, a new transmission.

It sounds like a worn out rotoflex to me. I had the same problem in my 2000 D2. Under accelleration or decellerationit would vibrate. But during steady cruising speed it was smooth. The cracks in the rubber allow the driveshaft to tourqe off center and vibrate. And return to center when no power is applied. You should look at your u-joints too. Grab your drive shaft and feel for any play. I changed all my rotoflex at 96,000 miles.
