Default Voltage

Another question, monitoring my voltage at the ODB I notice a fair amount of bounce from 13.2 at low RPM to 13.8 at around 2000 +.

Is this indicative of a worn belt / weak tensioner or fairly normal.

Still figuring out the quirks but everything else I have driven has had pretty stable voltage

It will go up/down depending on the load. As long as you don’t dip below 12.1v or higher than 14.5v you’re good to go.

Before replacing, make sure all of your battery cables are clean and tight and ground cables that attach to the engine are the same, clean and tight. If everything checks out, could be the voltage regulator is giving up the ship. Which is internal.

When a Bosch/Valeo Alternator is on the fritz you’ll know it from flickering lights, warning light on the dash, and you will be under 12v charging. Not to mention the Bosch Alternators can squeal badly before their death. I’ve seen it in Audi, and VW’s plenty that used Bosch Alternators.

I bought an 04 hunting D2 years ago just for the off road hardware (should have kept it) and when the owner jumped he fried the alternator. I was at 10.9v and the battery light wasn’t on, but when I put a load on it the light came on and she overall just wasn’t happy. It also kept resetting the HVAC to C vs F, and the trip kept going to 0.0. Got home barely before dark on the battery basically and slapped in a spare I had & all the crazy symtoms were gone.Any vehicle is going to have voltages that rise & fall depending on the load, AC on/off, headlights, and even the battery condition itself is a factor. I’d only be concerned if it dipped below 12v or higher than 14.8v max or if it was sounding funny.
