Y2K DII, 110K. I was driving at around 20mph when I heard a click sound from the engine bay. It sounded like a small metal part was dropped into the engine bay and got kick around by the fan. A couple miles later I heard the sound again when I stopped at a traffic light. Pull over and pop the hood, but couldn’t see anything wrong. On the next traffic light when I stepped on the gas the engine started to vibrate. Pull over again. The engine still idles smoothly but when I blip on the gas the fan wobble.

Got it tow back home and then proceeded to take off the fan belt. The fan wobbles badly. I think the bearing was gone. Removed the fan and found metal shaving around the water pump.

I need a new water pump but need to find out the best option.

Should I get Genuine ($289) or OE($159)?
Or from Autozone? They have lifetime replacement warranty at $233.

Should I replace the timing cover gasket and chain/gears as PM?

I am going to replace all the radiator hoses. The truck still has the old style top hose. Another member here said he replaced the hard plastic hoses with metal hoses. Anyone know where I can get those metal hoses?

Are stainless steel hoses better than rubber hoses for the DII?

 

Do not use one from the local auto parts store, or you will be replacing it a lot over the lifetime warranty, they are junk.
Check out Atlantic British and Rover Connection. I would lead towards on of their aftermarket units. Make sure to add a bottle of Water Wetter or Purple Ice to the coolant for better protection.

 

I agree...Don't buy any serious parts from Autozone, their parts are crap. None of the shops around here deal with Autozone at all, they get everything through Napa.

How about the timing cover gasket and chain/gears? When I remove the water pump will that affect the timing cover gasket since they share 2 or 3 bolts? From what I read, at 110K the timing chain/gears should be OK. But if I have to replace the timing cover gasket I may as well replace the chain/gears as cheap insurance. (And the crank seal?)

Any comment on the stainless steel radiator hoses?

 

Just anecdotal evidence, but my timing cover gasket was leaking immediately after replacing the water pump. The timing cover gasket is more involved since you have to pull the pan and the crank pulley.

 

I've seen two timing chains on land rovers now that went bad just after 60k. just giving you something to think about.

 

I wouldnt worry about the timing cover or chain.
Do not buy a Proline water pump or one from AutoZone.
All Disco's from the 4.0-4.6 take the same water pump, so your 2000 takes the same water pump as my 1997 as well as SloppyJoes 2004.
