Default water pump or pulley

the other day i heard a new noise coming from under the hood of my land rover disco 2 2001. Sounded like a pulley going bad.. so i pulled off my belt and checked all of my pulleys. Was able to move my fan back and forth, so that makes me think its my water pump or pulley???? any help with this?

thanks Joe

my money would be on the pump, the bearings may be going. Not to often a pully goes bad.If it is the pump, make sure the new one has the brass inpeller.

Good luck!

Ahh, without the belt, the viscous fan should be very easy to move either way. With
the belt on, the fan can be moved either way but with noticeable resistance.
Leaking / loosing coolant?
There was a recent post here attributing a squeaking noise under the hood to a worn out
serpentine belt.
As for the integrity of the cooling system, pressure testing will confirm leaks, not necessarily
a pump problem. Only leaks around the pump will tell, or a wobbly pump pulley.

New belt the first thing I did. You're right the fan moves with the belt on and off just more with it off. No leaks. New alternator new idler pulley. Where should I go from here also it only makes the noise when it's in drive, not at idle

Does the fan move forward and back, not left and right?
If it does, the water pump is shot. If that is the case, buy one of the AirTex, German pumps that is sold at British Parts of Utah, also replace your t/stat if it hasn't been done in the last couple of years, might also switch to one of the green coolants.

I wouldn't recommend overlooking the pulley's...I had two noisy pulley's, they didn't make noise with car off and freely spun by hand FYI. Replaced all 3 (there's a kit for this I believe, maybe AB?) and no more noise.

Not sure about "while just in drive" though, mostly because I don't know crap.

good luck.

There are three pulleys in there.
Two are stationary.
Spin them.
See if they make noise.
Try to wiggle them back to front.
Any play means bad bearings.
There is also the plastic idler pulley which puts pressure on the serpentine belt.
So, you have three pulleys.
