While changing tire noticed extra water dripping from front of engine. Belt is being shredded on one side. Watch it idle, and look at that water pump pulley wobble! Now, how to get it 20 miles home without the assistance of a wrecker... remove the viscous fan clutch in double quick time. That drops some of the load on the WP shaft, and if the fan is not mounted, it can't go through the radiator and the hood when the pump fails in grand fashion. Made it home without problems.

Are water pumps on a D1 shared by other Rovers, like the D2?

 

Yes, the 4.0 DI and all DII's use the same water pump.
The 3.9 uses a different water pump.
