Default Water pump removal and having issues....Please help.

I am removing the water pump and have been trying to remove the fan clutch all afternoon, to no avail. I cannot seem to loosen the nut from the pulley shaft.

Any tricks? I even made a tool that fits over the bolt heads of the pulley to keep it in place while reefing on the clutch nut....I am dead.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Shaun

Mine wouldn't budge either with a large crescent without turning the pulley. Bought one of these at harbor freight and locked it around the pulley. It came off with the first hit of the crescent.

Just for my piece of mind....When facing the front of the engine and the fan, according to the manual I am turning the nut clockwise to loosen (opposite to a normal nut). Could you confirm that info, this is my first water pump on my disco II.

Thanks

It's a normal RH (righty tighty) nut, so you are trying to tighten it turning it clockwise.

Large wrench on fan clutch bolt. Strike sharply with hammer, toward left, if you are stand in front of the truck, facing engine. Some increase their odds of success by taking a wrench and applying force to the tensior pulley to tighten rather than loosen serpantine belt.

You need a 5lb stubby hammer.
And a crescent wrench.

Put rags under the belt to block the travel.
Whack it hard - toward the left with the crescent wrench sticking up at the 12 o-clock position.

Don't whack the alternator.

I had a hell of a time removing mine. You know why? Some idiot thread locked the fan clutch to the water pump. I ended up removing the whole water pump, and ordered a new fan because I was already going to replace the fan clutch. I whacked and whacked and whacked that thing before finally giving up and taking the whole pump off, which is a BEAR to do with the fan in the way.
