It SHOULD to prevent theft.
I have never tried to shift mine with the engine off.
T/C definitely has a shift lock.

I guess mine is by passed, because I can shift the transfer case with the truck off.

While the truck is down for maintenance, you should check to see if the solenoid has been removed. Either it has been, or you're one of the lucky few who's solenoid has seized in the unlock position rather than the lock position.

Hello!

So I'm having a problem with shifting from 4 Low to 4 High. The rover will start in Neutral. It has sat for probably a month in cold weather in 4 low where I left it when I parked in the back part of my property. I did notice that I left the sunroof slightly cracked when I got into the vehicle today. We've had some rain, but didn't think much of a little water since it wasn't wide open, just cracked. Then I saw this post by you:

"Ran into the same problem once before on my D1... at a gas station with a boat in tow...of course...at the time i didnt know what to do and had to have a friend pick-up the boat and D1 dragged it onto the tow truck...shifter guts were all rusted from the sunroof leak..."

And wondered if the shifting problem and the sunroof being left slightly open could be connected??

Dave

FYI gents. Saw this the other day.
Transfer box interlock solenoid - Automatic gearbox vehicles
An interlock solenoid is fitted for North America and Japan. The solenoid is located on the top of the transfer box main
casing on vehicles up to 03 model year or on the selector lever assembly on vehicles from 03 model year. The
solenoid is connected to the transfer box relay which, in turn, is controlled by the IDM. The purpose of the solenoid is
to prevent neutral being selected on the transfer box when the ignition key is removed, thereby locking the box in
either high or low ratio.
