Default 96 Range Rover won't start sometimes unless I put in Neutral

Hi, I am new to the Forums and also a new RR owner. I love this rig, but since I bought about 2 months ago, it sometimes doesn't want to start unless I put in Neutral. Sometimes it takes a few times in N to make it start. Just wondering if anyone out there has any ideas on this. And please speak in layman terms, as I am a female and not overly familiar with mechanics... Also, I have noticed that when it's cold, the EAS doesn't seem to work and it is really bouncy. Not a big deal unless this means that the system is starting to fail? thanks in advance for the advice!

There is a rotary switch on the side of the transmission that converts the shifter position into electrical contacts that the transmission computer uses to determine what you want to do. Might be out of adjustment. #24 on attached drawings. Attached pages are from the shop manual and you can judge if you want to work on it or pass the pages along to your indy mechanic. The switch can also become full of mud and water, but that usually causes lots of other issues.
