Also consider using something like the Mobil1-301 oil filter for it larger size and better filter qualities.
Might also want to cut your oil changed back to somewhere between 5000 and 6000 miles.
Disco Mike, this question will reveal me to be a novice but I just picked up my first Disco (2003) and it is running 5W-30. I want to switch to Rotella T6 but it is only available in 5W-40. Can I make this switch and be ok?

Just put the 15w40 Rotella in it.

Your engine will thank you.

I was a bit skeptical about the Rotella T 15w40, but I changed to it and my noisy lifter went quiet over the next 500 miles. So I'm a fan.

In my opinion, the best filter for the money is Wix. Just found out my local O Reilley has them, behind the counter. Fram is on display, but you have to ask for the Wix.

Rotella 15w40 and Wix 51068 or 51515 filter, either one. Change oil and filter every 3K miles.

T6 is good stuff but, has been reported to cause older engines like ours to leak or leak more.

BTW if you just got the truck and it doesn't have a fully greasable new front drive shaft, with all of the u-joints having grease fittings, you will want to get one right away and grease it every 3K as well. Preferably one with 1310 series u-joints and a greasable centering ball.

^ what he said about the driveshaft.

I just bought an 04' for my new personal car and it has 118k. Perfectly clean inside and out, but the driveshaft exploded a hole in the trans. My mechanic suggested I just JB weld a patch on it, but I informed him the hole was right where the pan meets the trans case. Luckily I have a trans or 2 laying around.

Anyways, the driveshaft maintenance is no joke.

That's it, Wix 51068.

Been using Wix exclusively on all my vehicles, including the boat which has 3 filters (2 fuel, 1 oil), for years. You can see that the quality is a step above.

If you want a true full syn motor oil you need to use Royal Purple, Amsoil or Redline.
Those are true full syn and can go 20,000 miles between oil changes if you use the right oil filter.
Whoa, I thought Mobil 1 was full synthetic! That's messed up, they sure as hell advertise it as full synthetic. I have been using Mobil 1 for a long time, but have always been suspicious of how much advertising they do. Honestly, the fact that they do so much advertising has led to me looking elsewhere for my oil.

One of my mottos is "If they manufacturer has to heavily advertise a product to get you to buy it, there's probably a good reason why they have to."

This is not true. Mobil are secretive about their formulation, but even if it is now a hydrocracked group 3 base stock, this has been held up in court to be entitled to be called synthetic.

The brands you mentioned might still be using PAO or ester base stock, and would like to tell us that this is the only "true" synthetic, but that would not be true.

Summer - 30W-50W Synthetic blend.

Winter - 10W-40 synthetic blend.

Winter - if you are in very very cold country
put in Synthetic.

Would there be any value in mixing some Rotella T6 5W-40 in with Rotella 15W-40?
