Any year with the ability to lock the center diff. (CDL) that means all Disco I's and the 2004 Discovery II. Depending on who you talk to, some will say DI's are the best, others will tell you the 2004 DII is the best disco ever made. If you want more bells n whistles, go for the 2004, if you want less electronic luxuries, go for the DI. I think both are awesome, but it all comes down to what you want in an off road truck.

Any Rover is going to be more capable off road than just about any stock vehicle. The years with CDL are my choice for the added traction of being able to lock it. D1s are simpler to work on and have fewer electronics to cause problems on the trail.

They both have the CDL, electronic ignition and there is no confusion on the mid model year switch from a DI to a DII in '99.
So had I said '97-'99 would he know the difference between a '99 DI and a '99 DII?
A '99 DI is the exact same truck as a '97 DI.
But a '99 DII is totally different.
SO short answer...'97-'98.
