Don't kid yourself. You will have major problems with this car. If you're not prepared for that, then it's not the car to buy. Consider what I'm telling you. The problems are not just minor issues, and they're not something you can avoid. You're either ready to deal with it, or not.

You are right, a CDL would need to be installed on the 03. By buddy owns a 2002 Discovery and added a CDL since he has seen too many guys get stuck resulting in a tow.

The Hawkeye would be great tool to take with you and to own. Ours has paid for itself 3X over with diagnostics, code resets, reseting adaptive values and testing electronics.

+3 A scan tool like a Nanocom or Hawkeye is a must. I forgot to mention that. The Autel scan tool is another option provided the downloads for it are up to date.

Check the coolant to see if it has been replaced - green is good, clean orange is ok, dirty orange is bad

Watch coolant reservoir while engine is running for air bubbles (indicating a blown head gasket)

Using a flashlight, look underneath engine at front and back of heads for coolant leaks. May be a brown trail of coagulated coolant. If leaking, you have a blown head gasket.

Check front shaft for replacement/rebuild. Should have 4-5 grease nipples.

There will be fluid leaks, so expect the bottom of the engine to be dirty.

I love mine, but most of us are into these for a lot more than they're worth whether we bought smart or not. Just go into it ok with that or don't buy (as earlier stated). Wife and I wanted one for 14 yrs before I was able to buy and if I could do it over, I'd tell her she's nuts!

I'm glad I bought my 04...But I'm experienced with building motors etc.

So either have a large pile of money to fix its issues or have a smaller pile of money and fix them yourself.
