What is the Hydrocarbon Test
for the coolant? Looking for oil or fuel in the coolant system indicating a head gasket failure? Is it hard to do? What does it cost? Thanks for any info.
Go to any autoparts store, tell them you want the kit to check for a blown head gasket, the one you put into the coolant.
Its about $25 for the kit, it works like a Ph kit for a pool, just follow the directions, you cant screw it up.

No Mike, I am in the market for an 04 Hse7 and was told to do a Hydrocarbon teston one I was looking at. Just wasn't sure what that was or how big a deal it was. It's at Cadillac of Naperville if your bored.
It is a good test to do to verify HG is not leaking into coolant, but won't detect other leak avenues. As much $$$ as is on the line, spending an hour or so of billable time from another indy mechanic to inspect would be worthwhile. If they wanna sell it, they'll allow it. And twist their arm on a warranty if you can.
