Default What a Mess! Transmission Problem- Help, Please.

So, I started the day with my 2001 Disco II that refused to go into four low. Figuring that it was the interlock solenoid on the transfer case, I went about trying to locate and remove the old one. Problem #1- I couldn’t find the darn thing. Even after dropping the propeller shaft and removing something that was similar to the illustration in my shop manual, it still wasn’t there.

A little more online research and I learn that later versions moved the solenoid to beneath the shift lever. Broke open the shop manual again and followed the instructions to remove the console and got down to the point of facing rivets. As happy hour was approaching I decided to work on this another day and reassembled the mess. Problem #2 – now the darn thing won’t go into any gear and when I put the gear selector back into park it grinds like a son of a gun.

Can anyone offer any help on this? What did I do wrong when putting the console and shift lever back together? Thanks.

Sounds like you made it into neutral, or almost. Try pulling it back towards 4HI. Also, since everything is gear driven and not shift-on-the-fly, if it comes out of 4HI but won't go into 4LO, try doing it when rolling... SLOWLY.

Thanks. I'll give it a try. Would that also cause the grinding when I go back into park?

If you can not shift the t/case from high to low, it is either the solenoid on top of the t/case or a switch on the tranny, odds are it is the solenoid and it is on the top od the t/case, with 4 bolts holding down the cover.
