I am using Castrol GTX 10/30 in my 2000 Discovery and a fram ph8a filter every 3000 miles. I ran that in my last truck a 2000 Ford ranger 3.0, I put 230,000 very hard miles on it from new and it still ran great whenI traded it in.

Frequency of oil changes is the best way to protect the engine.

Cheers,

Sorry to dig up old posts.
But is Valvoline a good brand?
I saw synthetic engine oil 15W-40 Valvoline Turbo fleet. Looks good.
Its a lot cheaper than Castrol synthetic.

I use Royal Purple 5/30 and the K&N 3001. I think this is the best synthetic oil on the market, we use it in our BMW per the service shop we use and they converted us to it in the D2.

ORIGINAL: Spike555

ORIGINAL: targotsi

I usually pick up a Mobil 1 filter but see Fram filters nearly everywhere, what is the major downer on them? I have almost had to go with them on occasion because of the unavailability of some others.
It is the anti-drainback valve. It doesnt work very well. I had always used Fram oil filters until I bought my Rover and then I had to stop using them because the engine would always have a dry start because the oil filter would be empty after sitting over night.
I use Mopar (made by Purolator) oil filters and no more dry starts. Even after the truck has sat unused for 3 weeks.
My disco came with a FRAM Extra Guard. I changed my oil yesterday and when I removed the filter it was full of oil. With the position of the filter, how does the oil drain out over night?

It will siphone back into the sump. The filter will still look full, but you don't need much air in it fir the pump to start dry.

The FRAM extra guards are better than the original, but for a few bucks, why risk it? I use WIX filters just to be safe..
