What is the silver stuff on my brakes?

Thanks Spike. I won't worry about it. I got some on my finger and it is pasty in consistency. Either way, the brakes work great with no squealing or lights on the dash

Is the silver stuff on the pads braking surface or on the backing plate?
If it is an anti-brake squeak material it can not be on the pads.

It's on the backing plate. Spoke to a mechanic friend, and he thinks this is stuff is called brake quiet which is applied to the outer side of the pads

Yes, yes it is.

When I first got my truck back in 03, the PO put metallic after-market pads on. They squeeled and set off the ABS light. Changed the pads, problem fixed.

Wow, that sucks. Yet another reason I am glad I dont drive a DII.
