you said filler hole.... that kind of throws me .... get come other opinions from the other guys on here.. but in my experience with other motors exhaust in anything that doesn't touch the cylinder is bad juju, i would start shopping for another motor just in case....

you will see some crankcase vapours from the oil fill hole but if you pull the dipstick and lots of smoke comes out of the dipstick its an engine problem.

If it's excessive, my guess would be excessive blow by of exhaust past the piston rings. How many miles do you have on the engine? I'd do a compression or leak down test on each cylinder.

Forget a compression test, replace your PCV hoses and oil seperator.
If the crank case gases cant vent they will build up and come out any hole they can.

Without knowing the year of your truck you will need either one of these.

Do it right the first time and buy one of these kits.

Continuing to drive it with a clogged PCV will blow out a engine seal or two.

I like that answer the best. I hope I caught it in time, I just brought it up from Alabama yesterday, about a 1000 mile drive. Things looked OK when I left, but the engine light came on a about half way through the trip.

So I looked at those hoses on my disco, & they are just generic hoses.the one on the driver's side has a pretty good crimp in it where it bends to go to the throttle body, but not enough to block it completely. The pax side has no crimp, but when I removed it, I notices there is a plastic plug blocking the vent on the valve cover. I cant remove it, so I'll have to take off the cover & knock it out.

I don't see where the oil separator goes, but I already know... download the RAVE!

That little plastic "plug" that you see is the oil separator.
Use needle nose pliers to pull it out, you may need to twist it and pull.
Use Channel-Locks if you need to.
Look at the exploded view of the parts list for the links I gave you.
If that separator is clogged then the engine cant vent, if a hose is crimped to tight or also clogged same thing.

You can remove the oil separator and clean it with carb cleaner and then replace the PCV hoses with generic hoses of the same size, just make sure there are no kinks.
I replaced mine with gas line from a old lawnmower and other hose I just had laying around.
Make sure you clean the oil separator no less than once a year to prevent any more clogs.

Thanks Spike, I'm now 99.9% sure that was my problem. Unfortunately, when I tried to remove the oil separator the to broke off. Now it looks like I'll be removing the valve cover to tap it out from the back side. :/

That sucks.
If you cannot get it out any other way then you will need to take off the valve cover and do it that way.
