Default What would you offer for an 02?

I have found an 02 with 98, 500 miles on it they are asking $7980. That seems to be what the guides are telling me too. It is at a dealership. What would you offer? I have never bought a used car before so not sure what to start at. I have been approved by my CU for nada retail value, and do have a trade-in though they don't know that yet.

The truck is in Illinois, near Chicago.

Thanks!

Offer $6000, they will laugh, counter with "well then tell me what you will let it go for"
They say "$7,000"
You say $6500.
Do not pay any more than $7000 with sales tax for this truck.
Check the trade in value of it and print that and take it with you.
Having them to take $1000 off the ASKING price should not be a big deal for them.
If any warning lights are opno use that to your advandage to lower the price even more.
And DO NOT buy a extended warranty.

So if it comes down to it just say "I'll pay $7,000 out the door, take it or leave it", say this while waving your checkbook in the air like a lunatic.
Salesman like checkbooks.
Only do this if they are giving you a hard time, dont be afraid to walk.

I live in Chicago too and I just paid 8200 for an 03 HSE7 they were asking 9888. I did see an 02 for 6700 with 48k on the clock but it was gone before I got there, and they have not stopped calling me even though I said I am not in the market any more.

I agree with Spike on the asking price.
As for a warranty, if it is a Rover dealership and they will honor an extended warranty, at least think about it.

What are you using the truck for? If you are planning on off roading I do not believe the 02 has a Center Differential Locker which is a pretty big deal. I picked up an 01 w/ 60K miles for $5K out the door. It was filthy and had a few minor cosmetic issues, but overall in fantastic shape. I've put about $1000 into maintenance (magnacore wires, front driveshaft, fluids, new bumper, tires, etc. read Mike's 60K service list), but I now have a very reliable vehicle and paid about $6k total. I may be way off base, but I would suggest looking around a bit before committing.
